Situated in the Midlands of KwaZulu-Natal, the Bosch Hoek Golf Club is home to a nine-hole course that has an interesting history, as it formed part of a farm that was among the original voortrekker claims to be settled in the 1850s. The positioning of the eighteen tees is critical to any nine-hole layout, and here the front and back nines are very different. With the outward loop measuring 2 942 metres, and the homeward nine 2 918 metres, this is no monster – and yet lower handicap golfers will find sufficient challenges to keep them thinking. The longest hole on this course is the par-5 3rd which measures 517 metres. The shortest hole is the signature par-3 5th, which is played over water.
Officially opened in 2008 the 9 hole course, designed by Guy Smith a local golfer, attorney and golf architect, has been quoted by Ryan Botha, former South African No. 1 ranked top amateur, as “the finest 9-hole course” he has ever played upon. Peter Matkovich, who certainly needs no introduction, has said that “Gowrie Farm is a tribute to real golf” – high praise from a man that knows the game inside out. The course is exciting to play on, barrels of fun for the average weekender and quite a challenge to the beginner. The views are quite breath-taking too and the club only rents out motorized carts out to those over 65 or that have physical impairments – it’s quite easy to see why once you’ve stretched your legs out over the nine.
The beauty of the undulating Drakensberg Mountain range is indisputable, thus the reason to visit the World Heritage Site of Giant’s Castle and the enigmatic Bushman paintings in the vicinity that is done in a leisurely 3 km hike. After lunch the return to Durban is via a visit to the Nelson Mandela Capture site – a historically significant moment in South African history.
Our tour begins as we travel along the brand-new Golden Mile, past the majestic City Hall and the harbor on our way to the University of Natal. Then we visit the bustling African/Indian Markets at Warwick Triangle and the Durban Botanic Gardens before we head to the Moses Mabhida Stadium where you will have the option of experiencing the cable car ride (own account) to the top of the Stadium. The tour ends at uShaka Marine World with a dolphin show.
Shaka, legendary King of the Zulus! Experience traditional Zulu culture and customs at the largest Zulu kraal in all of Zululand, look into the future with an iSangoma or traditional healer…all this and more, packed into one exhilarating day. We’ve laid on some traditional Zulu beer for you to sample, while the Zulu dancers will thrill you with their grace and energy.
It’s undoubtedly world class! Home to Africa’s largest dolphinarium, the globally respected uShaka Marine World entices you to explore the wonders of Africa’s vast ocean life. In the aquarium, tank after tank offers a glorious insight into the wealth of South Africa’s Indian and Atlantic Ocean marine life, an experience not to be missed.
