Golf in South Africa: Golf Courses

  • Sakabula Golf Club & Country Estate

    Sakabula Golf Club is situated in the KwaZulu Natal Midlands. The layout is an 18 hole, par 73 course consisting of two very distinct and different 9 holes. Due to the topography of the land, the first 9 traverses an undulating valley providing breathtaking scenic views over the Drakensberg Range. The second 9 holes wind along a stunning natural watercourse and wetland area with numerous dams. The two 9s are so interestingly different in character and challenges that the golfer can experience what normally could only be found on two different golf courses.

    The course was opened for play in May 1997 and since then, the course has matured into a wonderful country golf club that provides a real test of golf in a relaxed and friendly, rural environment. Its location, just 15 minutes from Pietermaritzburg, 60 minutes from Central Durban and 45 minutes from Mooi River, makes it readily accessible to golfers from all over KwaZulu Natal. The course is fully fenced and offers security to golfers. There are no caddies at Sakabula but there are 30 motorised golf carts available for rental for those who wish to conserve their energy for the swing of the club.

  • Gowrie Golf Course

    Gowrie Farm was originally a golf course in the 1920's , so it seemed appropriate for Gowrie Farm to revert to a golf course in 2008 - 150 years after it was initially registered as a farm. Gowrie Farm Golf course is a 9 hole course , designed by Guy Smith , an Attorney from Pietermaritzburg. Guy is passionate about classic design and  is heavily influenced by the old courses of Scotland and some of the courses built in the United States in the early 1900's , in particular , Merion and Pinehurst. In building Gowrie Farm , Guy identified the following as important elements in classic design:

    -   Tees, which were close to the ground;
    -   Fairway shapes which were dictated to by the
         natural features of the land
    -   Push-up greens with interesting run-offs
    -   Bunkers which are tucked in close to the greens
    -   Fairway bunkers which dictate a player's choice
         of option from the tee.

    This has led to an exciting , traditional course which is fun for the average golfer , but tough for the low handicapped golfer to post a good score.
